Vascular Surgery is a specialty dealing with diseases affecting the vascular system including diseases of arteries, veins and lymphatic vessels with the exception of the diseases of the vessels of the heart, lungs and brain.
The vascular system is the body’s network of blood vessels. It includes the arteries, veins and capillaries that carry blood to and from the heart.
Vascular surgery includes a wide range of medical therapy, diagnostic procedures, interventional endovascular, minimally invasive procedures as well as surgical reconstruction.
Endovascular surgery is a rapidly advancing field, where the surgeon works via a needle puncture and is able to ‘recanalise’ narrowed or blocked arteries, and prevent dangerously dilated arteries (aneurysms) from bursting by inserting an artificial artery inside the abnormal segment. Compared to open surgery, endovascular surgery has shown many short term advantages such as reduced early mortality, length of hospital stay and quality of life.
⇒ Vascular diseases are common, but unfortunately the value of their prevention and early management has not been adequately stressed, which means that vascular diseases are too often left untreated until their effects are irreversible.
